Bioluminescent algae, iridescent beetles, luminous refractions, moving stones - Jonathan Bréchignac's work takes as its starting point natural phenomena which, despite scientific explanations, retain an undiminished power of fascination. His interdisciplinary practice combines sculpture, installation and painting. The exploration of matter occupies an important place in his work, which borrows codes and protocols from science (collecting samples, experiments and laboratory equipment, etc.). By recreating the "living" from synthetic materials staged using new technologies, Jonathan Bréchignac creates a poetics of fascination: he questions the boundary between the artificial and the natural, as well as our age's relationship with the living. In his work, the invocation of popular myths, scientific and esoteric theories blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality. He points to the limits of our ability to understand the world, revealing the processes by which belief emerges.
Jonathan Bréchignac was born in Provence, and lives and works in Paris. He is a graduate of the École de Recherche Graphique ERG (Brussels).
